Water Traction

Dr. Callewart and his staff are passionate about improving the comfort and quality of life of each patient. We offer a range of non-surgical and surgical treatments to treat spinal conditions and back pain. For those suffering from back or neck pain, or bulging discs in the lower back or neck, we offer non-invasive spinal decompression treatments.

What Is Water Traction Therapy?

There are several different types of water therapy. Depending upon your condition and the pain that you’re feeling, you may get the most benefit from using an underwater treadmill that allows you to exercise while having your body fully supported; underwater massage, which helps relieve tense muscles and joints; and other forms of underwater activities.

Whatever mode of water therapy is chosen, if the body is submerged to the chest there is an equivalent reduction in the stress of the body’s weight of approximately 80%. If you are experiencing pain this will provide tremendous relief.

Why Is Water Traction Therapy Performed?

Water traction therapy is most often recommended for those living with neck pain or lower back pain.

This is typically used as one part of a treatment plan – but it is a powerful option. Depending on your condition, it can unload compressed discs that could be causing your pain, allowing nutrient-filled fluid to flood the space between to promote healing; it can increase joint flexibility; decrease chronic disc bulging and more. All while relieving the pressure on your nerves while in the water.

How Is Water Traction Therapy Performed?

There are a few different forms of water therapy on offer here at the offices of Craig Callewart, M.D., P.A. Which treatment you’re given will depend on your condition, the severity of your symptoms and your medical history.

It could be anything from underwater exercise, massage or other activities. Ultimately though, the goal is that your body is 80% submerged during the movement – to help strengthen the muscles surrounding your spine while relieving pain.

What Should I Expect After Water Traction Therapy?

The exact details of what you could expect after water traction therapy will vary depending on your condition and the severity of your symptoms. With that said, your doctor will help create expectations for your unique case ahead of the treatment.

Typically though, patients report feeling relaxed and in less pain – though it can take multiple sessions to see long term relief.
