Is Your Lower Back Pain Coming From Your SI Joint? Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore

Is Your Lower Back Pain Coming From Your SI Joint? Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore

Understanding Sacroiliac (SI) Joint Dysfunction

If you’ve ever felt a deep ache in your lower back, buttock, or hip that just won’t go away, your
sacroiliac (SI) joint could be to blame. SI joint dysfunction is a common - but often overlooked - source
of back and pelvic pain. The good news? With the right diagnosis, movement, and strengthening, most
people can significantly reduce their pain and improve mobility.

What Is the Sacroiliac Joint?

The sacroiliac joints connect your sacrum (the base of your spine) to your pelvis. You have two of them;
one on each side. These joints don’t move much, but they play a critical role in stabilizing your body and
transferring weight between your upper body and legs.
When the SI joint becomes too stiff or too mobile, it can lead to inflammation, irritation, and pain in the
lower back, buttock, hip, or groin.

Common Causes of SI Joint Dysfunction

Several factors can stress or destabilize the SI joints, including:

  • Trauma or injury (such as a fall, car accident, or sports injury)
  • Pregnancy and childbirth, which stretch ligaments and change pelvic alignment
  • Uneven leg length or gait changes
  • Arthritis or degeneration of joint surfaces
  • Postural imbalances or muscle weakness in the hips and core

Typical Symptoms

SI joint pain can be confusing because it often mimics other back or hip problems. Common symptoms
include:

  • Deep ache or sharp pain in the lower back, buttock, or hip (often one-sided)
  • Pain that worsens with standing, walking, or climbing stairs
  • Discomfort when sitting for long periods or rolling over in bed
  • Radiating pain that may extend into the groin or upper thigh
  • A sense of instability or stiffness in the pelvis or lower back

If you notice these symptoms, it’s best to seek evaluation from your healthcare provider. Proper
diagnosis helps rule out other causes such as lumbar disc problems or hip joint conditions.
