(214) 271-4585Degenerative scoliosis, also known as adult-onset scoliosis, is a condition where the spine develops a sideways curvature due to age-related changes in the spine. Unlike adolescent scoliosis, which typically occurs during growth, degenerative scoliosis happens in adults as a result of the gradual breakdown of the spine’s discs, joints, and bones over time.
As people age, the intervertebral discs can lose height and flexibility, leading to uneven wear and tear on the spine. This imbalance can cause the spine to curve laterally (sideways) and may result in symptoms like back pain, stiffness, and nerve compression, which can lead to leg pain, numbness, or weakness.
Degenerative scoliosis is most common in people over the age of 50 and may be worsened by factors like osteoporosis, obesity, or a history of spinal injury. Treatment varies depending on the severity and symptoms but often includes physical therapy, pain management, and in some cases, surgery to straighten the spine or relieve nerve pressure.
Most patients experiencing pain can be seen by Dr. Callewart or his physician assistant within 24 hours in Dallas, Forney and Rockwall, Texas.
