Exploring Bee Therapy for Rheumatoid Arthritis
Much is written on the Internet about how honeybee stings can help a certain type of arthritis known as inflammatory arthritis. The most common forms of inflammatory arthritis are rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis.
Inflammatory arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes swelling of the joints, tenderness of the tendons, muscles, and morning stiffness. There are many medication's to treat this condition, but success is limited and the side effects can be substantial.
The thought is that the bee sting introduces venom into the body, and this can cause a reaction in people. This reaction modifies the immune system. Many people report relief from the arthritis and my personal search for scientific studies has found no conclusive proof that it helps .
That said, the body's immune system is not well understood by scientific medicine and I believe stings may help some people -- but it can also cause an allergic reaction leading to death in a small percentage of people.
So, at present, it is my judgment that there isn't enough scientific evidence to support bee stings to be recommended to treat arthritis in the general public.
