Preventing Back and Neck Pain When Working at a Computer

Preventing Back and Neck Pain When Working at a Computer

A large number of people are required to sit at a desk and use a computer every day at work. While there are far worse ways to spend the work day, working at a computer can actually lead to severe back and neck pain if you are not careful. Luckily, preventing and reversing this pain is fairly easy if you take the right precautions. These are the five best ways to prevent back pain and neck fatigue when working at a computer all day.

Sit Up Straight

Good posture is extremely important when sitting at a desk all day. Sitting the wrong way will put a lot of pressure on the back and neck. It will not be long before this pressure leads to pain. Your back needs to be completely straight and pressed against the office chair. You also want to keep your feet flat on the floor at all times because it will help support the lower back and hips.

Get a Standing Desk

If you do not believe that you can sit with good posture for eight hours every day, then you need to think about getting a standing desk. These special desks allow you to get all of your work done while standing up. The best thing about standing desks is that they do not take up any more space than a traditional desk. Most companies understand the dangers of sitting all day, so they will be happy to accommodate you with a new standing desk.

Take Plenty of Breaks

It is very important to take regular breaks when working at a computer. It is generally recommended to take a short break every 30 minutes. Get the most out of this break by taking a quick walk around the office. The short walk will relieve any tension that may be building up in the body. In addition to helping you avoid back and neck pain, the breaks will also help keep your eyes from getting tired.

Ignore the Phone

Every office worker is guilty of taking a quick peek at their phones during a slow part of the day, but this habit may be aggravating the neck. The easiest way to check the phone without getting caught by the boss is to keep it below the surface of the desk. This means that you will have to bend your neck in an uncomfortable position to see the phone, which is eventually going to cause cramps and muscle pain.

You do not have to deal with back pain and neck fatigue just because you work at a computer every day.
