What Can I Do About Neck Pain?

What Can I Do About Neck Pain?

Pain in the neck that occurs on a regular basis can be the result of poor posture while you are working, the wrong sleeping position or quick and jerking movements you might be making throughout your day. If you experience neck pain on a regular basis and you are sure that your problem doesn’t have anything to do with bad posturing or jerking movements, your discomfort might be a sign of a more serious health condition. In the meantime, there are some things you can do to reduce the worsening of neck pain that have been tried and proven.

Preventing Neck Pain

Most neck pain is associated with improper posture or the wear and tear on the joints and muscles that naturally come with aging. The former reason is the most common reason. Correcting and monitoring your posture on a regular basis will probably have you experiencing neck pain much less often. If you work at a desk with a computer or you are otherwise frequently on your laptop or desktop computer, stay alert to how you sit.

The best way to avoid neck strain is to keep your keep your head centered directly over your spine. Keep your back straight and your ears directly over your shoulders. Your computer screen should be at eye-level, so this might mean adjusting your work chair for height. When you have to constantly look upward or downward, it can take a toll on your neck muscles pretty quickly. Never strain your neck, even for short periods of time. Be aware of your posture while texting on your phone, as this alone is often times the culprit for many with neck strain symptoms.

When to Seek Medical Help

If your neck pain seems to have a life of its own and won’t go away, you might have a health condition that is causing it. It’s time to see a doctor if your neck pain involves tingling in the hands or legs. There might even be some weakness or numbness in these areas of the body. Schedule an appointment at the appearance of such symptoms.

We recommend scheduling an appointment with Craig C. Callewart, MD, PA to get to the root of the problem. Our physician will troubleshoot your condition by asking you key questions about your daily life. He might use x-rays or an MRI to get an inner look at your neck muscles and cervical vertebra.
